Marguerite

Picture taken on the pebbled Brighton beach England 1935

Photo taken 1938

These gorgeous pictures are of Marguerite Van Biene AKA Peggy Rapp. Born in 1920 Islington London.

She is described by her grand daughter Sue from Sussex Australia as the most "head strong, outspoken, knows what she wants person she has ever met" and even considers her the most cherished person in their family.. Awww :)

Marguerite worked part time at a fish and chip shop and had 3 children.
Aged 91 now and still plays bowls and drives.- How cute!

Check out the dress in the second photo. Love it.

Emma Kilby 1840

Photo taken 1870

Emma Kilby was born on the 4th of March 1840 in Islington London.
She ran away from home at the age of 14 because of a not so nice step father.
She worked as a servant, married Edwin George Kilby and had 3 children.
1870s fashion in European and European influenced clothing is characterised by a gradual return to a narrow silhouette after the full skirted fashions from the 1850's-60's.

About when she was young

When she was young is for anyone who is curious about grandmothers and great grandmothers. People like me who often see little old ladies on the street and wonder about their lives when they were young, what they wore, who they are, where they lived and grew up. Were they famous ,rich, poor, crazy, shy or outgoing?
My grandmother and great grandmother in the picture above i believe deserve to be remembered, that's why I'm dedicating this blog to them and all the other women who have passed and have slowly been forgotten. I am their descendant,  the reason i am alive today in a sense.

If you have some photographs of your mother, grandmother, nana or great grandmother/nana and would like to share their store, don't be shy. email them to whenshewasyoung@yahoo.com.au Be the first to be featured.
